During the recent demonstrations against the sexist remarks of Donald Trump, millions of women gathered together wearing their pink pussycat hats. But putting political opinions aside, the ‘pink pussycat hat’ is a great project for beginner knitters ! If you’d like to make one then here’s the pattern that I used.

You will need:  2 x 50g  (2 x 75m ) of  Woolly 5  DMC ( worsted weight )

or  2 x 50g  ( 2 x 125m ) of Woolly normal DMC ( fingering weight ) 2 STRANDS held together.

Using 5mm needles, cast on 46 sts and knit for  8/9 cm using  1 X 1 rib ( K1, P1 to end )

Change and work in stocking stitch for another 24 cm ( knit 1 row, purl 1 row ) – then finish again with another 8/9 cm ) of 1 X 1 rib. Cast off loosely. Fold hat in half and sew up the sides – I finished off by sewing 1 stitch in the middle of each corner just to hold the ears in place.

Of course you can adapt this pattern for any size yarn as long as you calculate how many stitches you need for  the yarn you’ll be using (mine hat measures 21-22cm wide & 20cm long,  unstretched and flat which is perfect for the average size adult head )

Note to all cat lover’s, no pink pussycats were harmed in the making of this hat….
