Cow girl blues has arrived at Kaleidoscope!

Cowgirlblues

Based in Cape Town  South Africa,’ Cowgirlblues’  specialises in hand-dyed textiles and yarns.  Bridget Henderson who founded the company,  is a keen knitter and loves to play around with different textures and colours. When Bridget first settled in Cape Town, she was disappointed at the lack of locally produced  quality wools , so she decided to spin and dye her own.

She personally manages every step from the choice of product base right up to the  ball winding. Each stage is carried out according to her strict criteria, respecting the environment, man and animal alike.

Having chosen the best quality merino and mohair wools ( all sourced locally), they are then carefully washed, combed, and  spun according to international rules and regulations. The yarns are then dyed by hand using traditional methods and wound into balls or skeins by a skilled team of workers.

At ‘Cowgirlblues’ a  constant effort goes into the choosing of  colours, resulting in fresh new shades to update  their  rich and inspiring  palette.

… And Kaleidoscope is now stocking a beautiful selection of semi solid colours in  Merino Sock & Merino DK.

All suitable for knitting and crocheting clothes, scarves and other items for  any season.

Vinnis colours

‘New South African Yarns for Summer 2017’

Vinnis Colors is a company that offers ethical and fairtrade knitting yarns. Based in Cape Town, South Africa, they specialize in hand dyed cotton and bamboo yarns, offering a rich palette of more than 200 colors. Vinnis Colors started at the end of the 20th century. In 1993, Vinni Nielsen, a Danish nurse, a fierce knitter, settled in South Africa. Faced with the virtually non-existent supply of cotton knitting yarns, she embarked on artisan dyeing and made her first experiments in her kitchen. Furniture and windows are requisitioned for drying the yarns and quickly Vinni decided to hire help to wind them into skeins and balls. They soon then swapped the kitchen for the garden shed, where the threads are dyed in vats. Six years later, and the now flourishing business has allowed them to build two buildings in Cape Town and further develop their products.

Vinni and her team..

Each manufacturing process is done by hand, from dyeing to winding into balls. The threads are first dipped gently into dye baths, before being laid out to dry in the sun, in the factory yard.

Vinnis success is not only due to a dedicated team of women and men located close to the factory and recruited in economically disadvantaged rural areas, but also to a loyal clientele seduced by these unique South African yarns.

Vinnis Colors offer a wide range of colors – from the softest pastels to the deepest and most vibrant shades – giving them their unique trademark.

Serina  is a hand dyed bamboo/viscose yarn ,100% eco-friendly. Bamboo yarn has a luxurious sheen, making each knit/crochet project into a unique adventure! Its natural drape is perfect for making scarves, shawls, collars or small summer tops. (6€ /50g/111m /3mm needles.)

Tori & serina

Tori, the latest addition to Vinnis Colors, is a very soft chunky yarn (50% bamboo – 50% cotton) composed of 14 strands of bamboo and cotton spun together. Tori is delicately dyed by hand, without any pressure. This mix of cotton/ bamboo guarantees a beautiful range of shades and colours. Tori is machine washable and can be used for clothing, accessories for home decor. ( 9,85€/ 100g/ 87m/ 6mm needles )

Hedgehog Fibres colours reflect Beata’s personal style and range from dark, rich and earthy to crazy, fluorescent and vibrant depending on her moods – but always colours she loves! Originally from Slovakia, Beata has called Ireland her home for over a decade. In Slovakian, Jezek means hedgehog so in 2008, when knitting friends pushed her to sell her yarns, Hedgehog Fibres was founded. (No Hedgehogs are harmed in the making of our products!)

Yarn dyeing started as a extension of Beata Jezek’s other hobbies – spinning, knitting and crochet. Beata says “Soon after I took up knitting, I realised I really wanted to create my own yarn line of soft, squishy yarns in beautiful colours. It’s the colours I want to knit with, the colours I want to wear and the colours I can’t live without.”

And another talented, very well-known, knitting designer , and colour genius living in Amsterdam, (‘Mr. West’) is also a VERY big fan of Beata’s yarns. Many of which he uses in his own pattern designs.
