Vinnis colours

‘New South African Yarns for Summer 2017’

Vinnis Colors is a company that offers ethical and fairtrade knitting yarns. Based in Cape Town, South Africa, they specialize in hand dyed cotton and bamboo yarns, offering a rich palette of more than 200 colors. Vinnis Colors started at the end of the 20th century. In 1993, Vinni Nielsen, a Danish nurse, a fierce knitter, settled in South Africa. Faced with the virtually non-existent supply of cotton knitting yarns, she embarked on artisan dyeing and made her first experiments in her kitchen. Furniture and windows are requisitioned for drying the yarns and quickly Vinni decided to hire help to wind them into skeins and balls. They soon then swapped the kitchen for the garden shed, where the threads are dyed in vats. Six years later, and the now flourishing business has allowed them to build two buildings in Cape Town and further develop their products.

Vinni and her team..

Each manufacturing process is done by hand, from dyeing to winding into balls. The threads are first dipped gently into dye baths, before being laid out to dry in the sun, in the factory yard.

Vinnis success is not only due to a dedicated team of women and men located close to the factory and recruited in economically disadvantaged rural areas, but also to a loyal clientele seduced by these unique South African yarns.

Vinnis Colors offer a wide range of colors – from the softest pastels to the deepest and most vibrant shades – giving them their unique trademark.

Serina  is a hand dyed bamboo/viscose yarn ,100% eco-friendly. Bamboo yarn has a luxurious sheen, making each knit/crochet project into a unique adventure! Its natural drape is perfect for making scarves, shawls, collars or small summer tops. (6€ /50g/111m /3mm needles.)

Tori & serina

Tori, the latest addition to Vinnis Colors, is a very soft chunky yarn (50% bamboo – 50% cotton) composed of 14 strands of bamboo and cotton spun together. Tori is delicately dyed by hand, without any pressure. This mix of cotton/ bamboo guarantees a beautiful range of shades and colours. Tori is machine washable and can be used for clothing, accessories for home decor. ( 9,85€/ 100g/ 87m/ 6mm needles )
